The Hex3 JaJa Stylus: A Pressure-Sensitive iPad Drawing Tool That Uses Sound To Paint A Picture

Meet the Hex3 JaJa stylus, a pressure-sensitive drawing tool for the iPad (and other tablets, too) that transmits information to the device via sound waves, eschewing the need for a Bluetooth connection. Tablet First, Mobile Second.

For the past six months I have owned the epitome of geek chic: an iPad 3 with a Logitech Ultrathin. I bought it because it seemed like a neat and lightweight solution to a persistent back pain problem that I have with laptops. However as I used it, it would draw much attention.

Its appearance on a table in a conference would spark conversations. Clients would stare mystified while I showed them how it worked and then ask where they could get one of their own. Random passers-by would walk up to me at events, on the train or in cafes and start much the same conversation. What kind of wunder-kit is this? How does it work? What kind of battery life does it have? And so on.

LinkedIn And The Mutable Rules Of Social Networking

LinkedIn And The Mutable Rules Of Social Networking

What is a social network? In general terms, Facebook is a network of friends and family. Twitter is a network of people/things you find interesting. And LinkedIn is a network of colleagues – to cover off a few of the big ones. (I’m still trying to figure out a neat description for Google+ — feel free to add yours in the comments.) But those neat descriptions are simplifications of more complex and changeable realities.

Apple publishes legal case failure

Apple publishes legal case failure

Apple has published a statement acknowledging that it failed in a legal action over Samsung's Galaxy tablet computer. The American electronics giant was instructed to make the ruling public after losing its case that the Samsung Galaxy Tab was too similar to its own product. A judge at the High Court in London ruled in July that the Galaxy tablet was not "cool" enough to be confused with Apple's iPad.

Apple challenged the finding at the Court of Appeal, but the appeal was dismissed earlier this month.

Vodafone UK spoiler campaign targets EE 4G launch

Vodafone wrapped ads around British national newspapers on Friday touting the quality of its network ahead of rival EE's launch of next-generation 4G services next week. The campaign, in The Daily Telegraph, The Independent and The Guardian nationals and in the Metro and City AM freesheets, cost more than 4.5 million pounds, according to a source close to the company.

It will be supported by outdoor advertising. Since the arrival of smartphones, network quality has come to the fore as a point of differentiation between telecom operators, both in Britain and in other markets, according to analyst Thomas Wehmeier at Informa Telecoms and Media.

For the first time, Apple's expected iPad Mini will face stiff competition from Day One.

Arch-rival Google already has a highly successful 7-inch tablet, the Asus-made Nexus 7.

In Britain, both Amazon's Kindle Fire and US book chain's Barnes and Noble will offer tablets for £159, with huge libraries of books, films and TV shows on offer.

"The rumoured smaller (7” – 8”), cheaper iPad marks a significant shift in Apple’s strategy," says Mark Leach, chief strategy analyst at Ovum.

Incredible '3D printer' turns anyone into a sculpture

If you can imagine it, you can print it… that seemed to be the mantra on everyone's lips at the world's first ever 3D Printshow.

The London event, held this weekend, showcased everything from 3D printed shoes and iPhone cases, to works of art and jewellery, even extending to espresso cups and a guitar.

One machine even turns smartphone portraits into a plastic 'bust' of its owner's head.

All were created using the futuristic technology, which grabbed the headlines earlier this year. Back then scientists were able to develop a 3D printed metal jaw that was then transplanted onto an 83-year-old woman in the first operation of its kind.

An internal video has been circulated around Google detailing what devices and software will be unveiled at the company's New York 29 October event.

Topping the bill is confirmation of a Samsung built 10-inch tablet, codenamed "Manta", but more likely to arrive as the Nexus 10. Noticeably the device will run Android 4.2, but rather than be Key Lime Pie, it will in fact just be another increment to the existing Jelly Bean OS.

New iPad to launch alongside iPad mini

Blimey, the Apple event tomorrow (23 October) is shaping up to be a Generation Game-like conveyor belt of products whizzed before journalists' eyes, with a new iPad rumoured to be announced alongside the iPad mini, 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, new iMac and an update model of the Mac mini.

Sources state that the 3rd generation 9.7-inch iPad is going to be rejigged a bit. According to 9to5Mac, they claim that the company is adding some important enhancements, such as the adoption of the new Lightning connector instead of the old, wider socket and compatibility for global standards of 4G mobile internet - EE's UK network included.

Apple iPad 4 parts leak ahead of iPad mini release

Apple (AAPL) is wildly expected to introduce a smaller 7.85-inch iPad mini at the company’s event on Tuesday, but that doesn’t mean a newer iPad isn’t making its way towards production for release in the spring. We have received photos of what we’re told is the 4th generation iPad’s lightning dock connector. The photo compares the 4th generation iPad’s dock to the iPad mini dock, and the connector looks to be a brand new design.

This most likely signals that the 4th generation iPad will also feature a redesigned interior to accommodate different components. We were also told that this is not simply the refreshed lightning dock connector for the 3rd generation iPad. We’ll have much more shortly. Thanks to Apple.pro and the Apple Musium Taiwan

Activision hopes new Skylanders game is a holiday hit

Activision

Activision Blizzard is betting big on children's fantasy adventure game "Skylanders" this holiday, with the launch of a new title on Sunday and plans for more mobile versions of the console game.
The franchise's second offering, "Skylanders: Giants", will hit stores in North America following the success of "Skylanders: Spyro's Adventures" whose U.S. sales have exceeded 286 million game packs, toys and accessories since its 2011 release.

Activision, which is better known for hardcore shooter games, is trying to stem the loss of subscribers from its bread-and-butter games like "World of Warcraft" and diversify revenue sources. Analysts say the "Skylanders" franchise can generate sales not just from games but also toys and licensed merchandise from apparel to bicycles.

Nintendo’s Wii U voice chat mess: Console might not support wireless headsets

Other than the unique touchscreen-equipped GamePad controller, the Wii U is a console that isn’t too different from this generation’s Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It’s Nintendo’s (NTDOY) “catch up” console that finally adds high-definition graphics, a robust selection of video content through Nintendo TVii and an online gaming platform that the company says will finally compete with Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. Both of those services support voice chat during gaming sessions online and they both support wireless headsets, but the Nintendo Wii U might not even have simple voice chat down without a convoluted setup, according to Kotaku.

Cheap unlimited data for Samsung fans

MetroPCS adds Galaxy S III, promises cheap unlimited data for Samsung fans

At long last, prepaid wireless carrier MetroPCS (PCS) has a popular high-end device to go with its low-cost data plans. MetroPCS on Friday announced that it will now offer customers the Samsung (005930) Galaxy S III, although they’ll have to pay the full $499 to get it since MetroPCS isn’t subsidizing it. On the other hand, customers willing to pay the upfront expenses could save money on their wireless bills in the long run since they’ll be able to take advantage of the carrier’s $55 monthly plan that delivers unlimited voice, text messaging and LTE data on a single line. MetroPCS, which recently agreed to merge with T-Mobile, is one of the few wireless carriers still waiting for Apple (AAPL) to give it the green light to sell the iPhone. The company’s full press release is posted below.

Charge Your Phone by Moving Your Body

We're constantly being told to get off our laptops and phones and head outside to get some exercise, but why not get the best of both worlds -- channel your body power for mobile power. The nPower PEG (Personal Energy Generator) turns your personal kinetic energy into electrical charges to keep devices fully juiced up. The more energy you create, the more you push into your phone. It's the ultimate symbiotic relationship.

The device contains a weight, springs, and inductive coil that stores power in the internal battery with each movement you make. But you have to be a serious mover and shaker to get your cellphone or iPod to power up. One minute of walking will get you enough power for one minute of listening on an iPod Nano. It takes 26 minutes of walking for one minute of talk time on a 3G iPhone.

Yahoo to exit South Korea in first Asian pullout

Yahoo Inc's South Korean operation said on Friday it will quit the country, underscoring its struggle against Google Inc and local competitors expanding aggressively into mobile advertising and online services.
South Korea is the first Asian country Yahoo is leaving, the firm said. An industry pioneer and household Internet brand, it has been overshadowed by global rivals including Facebook Inc and Google in recent years.
"Yahoo has faced several challenges in the past couple of years and decided to pull out of the (Korean) business to put more resources on global business and become more powerful and successful," Yahoo said in a statement.

Sony to cut HQ staff by a fifth, shutter Japan plant

Sony Corp said it will cut staff in its headquarters by a fifth and shutter a factory making camera lenses and mobile phones in Japan, providing new details of a previously announced plan to trim its global headcount by 10,000 by end-March.
In addition to 1,800 at a chemical business it sold to a state-run bank in Japan, Sony will let go roughly another 2,000 people from its head office and plant in Gifu, central Japan, Sony said in a statement on Friday.
Around another 2,000 workers will be trimmed in Europe, half at a joint mobile phone venture with Ericsson it recently ended. The remaining job losses will be at other factories around the world, the company said.

Mobile revolution, economy trip up tech giants

Mobile may be the future for technology, but even with the worldwide proliferation of high-powered devices like smartphones and tablets, some companies are struggling to maintain consistent revenue streams.
Earnings disappointments this week from Intel Corp, Microsoft Corp, Google Inc and AMD underscore how Silicon Valley, both the old guard and new, is struggling to profit from consumers' waning love affair with the stalwart PC and infatuation with mobile -- the most significant tectonic shift in the industry since the advent of the Internet.

Microsoft profit falls ahead of Windows 8 launch

Microsoft Corp.'s net income fell 22 percent in the latest quarter as it deferred revenue from the sale of its upcoming Windows 8 operating system to PC makers — and as PC sales in general took a dive.
The economic troubles in Europe also weighed on results, which missed Wall Street expectations.
The software company said Thursday that net income was $4.47 billion, or 53 cents per share, in the fiscal first quarter, which ended Sept. 30. That was down from $5.7 billion, or 68 cents per share, a year ago.
