Top ten tips to make iPhone work faster

Most iPhone owners think they've mastered their handsets - but there are lots of hidden tricks you can use to save time, from quick app launchers to personalised settings and shortcuts.

Here we’ve picked ten, but there are lots more out there. As Apple’s latest operating system iOS 6 works on all iPhone models, these tips and tricks work on every Apple handset.

Ten Top Tips

1. Use typing shortcuts for common phrases
When it comes to typing messages, we tend to repeat many of the same stock phrases and responses, especially with friends and family. To save yourself constantly retyping, you can instead assign each a shortcut.

Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Add New Shortcut… Here you can enter your common phrase, say ‘See you at home’, and create a shortcut for it, say ‘cuh’. Tap ‘Save’ and when you next write a message and type ‘cuh’, the auto correct will automatically suggest ‘See you at home’.

2. Pre-programme voice commands
The Apple concierge, Siri is capable of doing your bidding without you having to use your keypad and can be customised with shortcuts to the people you call and text the most.

Turn on Siri and ask him to, for example, ‘Call my girlfriend’. Siri will ask your girlfriend’s name and as long as she’s listed in your address book when you say it, he’ll tag her with that phrase. Then, the next time you want to call her, simply say ‘Call my girlfriend’ and he’ll dial her number.

3. Launch apps with your voice
While we’re talking about Siri, a nifty addition to iOS 6 is his newfound ability to launch apps on demand. Just say ‘Launch’ or ‘Open’ and the app’s name and it’ll be on your screen in seconds.

It may sound a mite lazy, but if you’re someone with tens or hundreds of apps on your phone this is a great way to skip all the searching looking for the one you want.

4. Don't waste time scrolling
Long pages of status updates, email threads and internet pages can have you frantically scrolling up and down for ages. Now a simple tap on your phone’s status bar (the bit at the top with the time, reception and battery life in) will pop you back to the top of whatever page or email you’re looking at.

5. Cut down on iMessage spam
If you’re unlucky enough to have had your phone number launched into the spamosphere then you may be getting lots of unwanted iMessages from automated numbers.

Save yourself from seeing these by setting your iMessage alerts to show only numbers saved in your address book. Just go to Settings > Notifications > Messages then scroll down to ‘Show iMessage Alerts From:’ and set it to ‘My Contacts Only’.

Remember though, if you get an iMessage from anyone not listed in your contacts – spam or not – then you won’t see it!

6. Share photos faster
If you stumble across a picture on the internet you feel the need to share or save for yourself, it takes mere seconds on an iPhone.

Just tap and hold your digit on the picture for a second and you’ll see an overlay asking if you want to save it (among other options). Do so and it will automatically add to your native Photos app, from where you can print, email and post it online – or if you love it that much set it as your wallpaper.

7. Speed up Siri
You could argue that pressing a button to activate Siri means you might as well carry on tapping away to get what you want rather than engage him in conversation. But you can set your iPhone to start Siri simply by lifting it to your ear.

Go to Settings > General > Siri and turn on ‘Raise To Speak’. Then, whenever you want to talk to Siri just lift your phone to your ear and wait for the ping before telling him what you want – even if your phone is locked.

8. Customise music controls
It’s now easy to customise your Music app and edit your quick settings so you can search for tracks however you want. Open the app, tap on ‘More’ (in the quick controls at the bottom of the screen) and then ‘Edit’ (top left of the screen). This brings up all the searchable options, where you can drag the one you want quick access to into the bottom bar and it will replace what’s already there. Tap on ‘Done’ and away you go.

9. Download songs automatically
If you’ve got other gadgets running iOS (like an iPad) or use iTunes on your computer, you can set your iPhone to automatically download your music, apps and book purchases so your devices are all in sync without you having to do a thing.

Head over to Settings > iTunes & App Stores, and under Automatic Downloads switch the toggles to ‘ON’. Now anything you buy on any of these devices will automatically add to your iPhone without you lifting a finger.

10. Speed up writing emails
If you have several email accounts on your iPhone it’s a hassle locating a half written draft email. Sorry, it was a hassle. Now just tap and hold the compose button and any draft emails across your accounts will appear.
